Evangelical Texas pastor Tony Evans steps down from church due to unnamed 'sin'

Dr. Tony Evans, a prominent evangelical pastor based in Texas, has announced his resignation from leadership at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas.

In a statement released on Sunday via the church’s website, Evans cited undisclosed “sin” as the reason for his decision to step down. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the biblical standard of repentance and restoration, acknowledging that he had fallen short of that standard in the past.

While Evans clarified that he had not committed any crimes, he admitted to exercising poor judgment in his actions. The decision for him to resign was reached after extensive prayer and discussions with church elders.

Bobby Gibson, another pastor at the church, along with the church elders, will provide further details regarding interim leadership and future plans in the coming days.

Tony Evans, who founded Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in 1976 with just 10 members, has seen the church grow to over 10,000 members since its inception. He is also known for his radio program, “The Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans,” which airs on numerous stations worldwide. Additionally, Evans previously served as the chaplain for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Mavericks.

Evans was previously married to Lois Evans until her passing in 2019, and they had four children together: Chrystal Hurst, Priscilla Shirer, Anthony Jr. Evans, and Jonathan Evans. He remarried Carla Evans (formerly Carla Crummie) in November 2023.
